Page builder or custom theme? Choosing the right WordPress build
Elementor, Bricks, Divi or a theme built from scratch? A plain-English guide to the trade-offs, and how we decide which one to recommend.

“WordPress website” covers a lot of ground. Two sites can look identical in the browser and be built in completely different ways underneath. The biggest choice is usually this one: a page builder or a custom theme?
Neither is better in every case. Here’s how to think about it.
What a page builder gives you
Page builders such as Elementor, Bricks and Divi let you design and edit pages visually. Drag a section in, change a heading, swap an image and see the result straight away.
Good for:
- Teams who want to build new landing pages themselves
- Marketing sites that change often
- Projects where speed of delivery matters most
Things to keep in mind:
- Pages can carry more code than strictly necessary, so performance needs attention
- Very flexible editing also means it’s easier to accidentally break a layout
- You’re tied to the builder you choose, and moving away later means a rebuild
What a custom theme gives you
A custom theme is written specifically for your site. Editing usually happens through structured fields or the native block editor rather than free-form drag-and-drop.
Good for:
- Sites with specific functionality or unusual layouts
- Projects where performance and clean code are priorities
- Content that follows consistent patterns, edited by people who want guard-rails
Things to keep in mind:
- It usually takes longer to build than a page-builder site
- New layout types may need a developer to add
A quick way to decide
Ask yourself three questions:
- Who will edit the site, and how often? If your marketing team wants to create new pages every week, a page builder is hard to beat.
- How specific is the functionality? The more custom the requirements, the more a custom theme makes sense.
- What matters most right now: launching fast, or long-term flexibility? There’s no wrong answer, but it’s worth being honest about it.
How we recommend one
On a discovery call we look at your goals, your budget, who will maintain the site and what you might need in a year or two. Then we recommend the approach that fits. Sometimes that’s a page builder, sometimes a custom theme, and occasionally a mix of both.
What we won’t do is push the bigger, more expensive option when a simpler one will serve you just as well. Either way, the site is built by our WordPress development team and checked before launch.
